Coverage Evaluation Survey of Slums of Junagadh Municipal Corporation

  • Objective : The study mainly had two objectives: To assess the  immunization  coverage  in  the  children  of  12-23 months of age, in the slum areas of Junagadh Municipal Corporation, Gujarat in April, 2009 and to find out the reason for immunization failure, in the children of 12-23 months of age, in the slum areas of Junagadh Municipal Corporation, Gujarat in April, 2009.
  • Background : The Junagadh Municipal Corporation was a newly made corporation, so no prior data was available in the city about various health indicators. This survey is an attempt to set baseline indicators for the programme.
  • Methodology : A total of 210 mothers of children between the  ages  12-23  months  were  interviewed  in  the  survey these respondents were selected using the Multi stage sampling based on 30 X 7 method. In step 1, 30 clusters were selected and in next step 7 children were selected from each cluster.
  • Findings : The study showed that only 49.9 % of the children were fully immunized and the major cause of immunization was lack of information about the immunization services
  • Recommendations : It was identified from the study that there  is  strong  need  to  improve  monitoring  of immunization  sessions,  training  of  health  worker,  and more focused IEC services to educate the people.
