Urban health vulnerability assessment & Intervention planning

Objective : The rationale behind the study was to assess the vulnerability of urban population of Gandhinagar and
to develop some holistic approach for overall
development of slum population. Rather than just
focussing on health
indicators, the other pre-dispersive factors were also taken into account, which
have direct/indirect effect on health status of individuals.
Background : Gandhinagar
district comes under the
category of well performing district. Being the
lies more on the
district officials by boasting off a very good figure of 99% institutional
delivery and 92% family planning, which is mainly attributed to rural area, whereas the
contribution of urban
area in these commendable
targets was far then minimal. This
very fact came as an inspiration for developing a holistic approach for urban slums development.
Methodology : The study was of an explorative type where
there was a systematic collection and presentation of data to give a clear picture
of the situation. The study
was of both quantitative
(urban health reports
of particular block collected from
District MIS) as
of qualitative (primary data) type from
20 slums of gandhinagar district..
Following data collection tools includes, Health
Field notes and
observations, Focus Group Discussions (of CBHV, Staff Nurse, pregnant women, local inhabitants), In-formal discussions, Analysis of
routine urban health
reports and Mamta day questionnaire for showing urban and
Findings : The slums were
to the matrix by the methods of FGD’s and PRA techniques into
vulnerable, moderately vulnerable and low vulnerable.
Then with stakeholder’s consultation route cause analysis was carried out and the intervention
