  • Agency : Urban Health, Urban Slum Development, Health Status
  • Objective : The rationale behind the study was to assess the vulnerability of urban population of Gandhinagar and to develop some holistic approach for overall development of slum population. Rather than just focussing on health indicators, the other pre-dispersive factors were also taken into account, which have direct/indirect effect on health status of individuals.
  • Background : Gandhinagar district comes under the category  of  well  performing  district.  Being  the  state capital, the responsibility even lies more on the district officials by boasting off a very good figure of 99% institutional delivery and 92% family planning, which is mainly attributed to rural area, whereas the contribution of urban area in these commendable targets was far then minimal.   This very fact came as an inspiration for developing a holistic approach for urban slums development.
  • Methodology : The study was of an explorative type where there was a systematic collection and presentation of data to give a clear picture of the situation. The study was of both quantitative (urban health reports of particular block collected   from   District   MIS)   as   well   of   qualitative (primary data) type from 20 slums of gandhinagar district.. Following data collection tools includes, Health vulnerability  assessment  ranking  matrix  and  checklist, Field notes and observations, Focus Group Discussions (of CBHV, Staff Nurse, pregnant women, local inhabitants), In-formal discussions, Analysis of routine urban health reports and Mamta day questionnaire for showing urban and rural disparity.
  • Findings : The  slums  were  classified  according  to  the matrix by the methods of FGD’s and PRA techniques into 3 categories viz.highly vulnerable, moderately vulnerable and low vulnerable. Then with stakeholder’s consultation route cause analysis was carried out and the intervention planning was done.
  • Recommendations : Evening classes for adults and life skills  training  in  collaboration  with  NYSK  is  required. Need to prioritize the most vulnerable & Vulnerability assessment enables programs to target resources.
