Perception of Market Leaders to Highlight the Role Played by Private Providers in Introducing Innovations in the Health Market in India

  • Objective : The Objective of the study was to understand the perception of the Health market leaders about the role of Private players in introducing innovations in the healthcare market in India.
    The specific goals were:
    1. To extract a common definition of health market as per the market leaders.  
    2. To understand the emerging trends in the health market and innovations for the poor.
    3.  To highlight the opportunities /specific areas for engagement with the health market innovations for the poor.



  • Background : Private sector is the predominant health care provider in India. The Private sector responds better to patient's interests than the public sector in terms of Accessibility, satisfaction with treatment, availability of medicines. Will be the McKinsey estimates that health care- third biggest market by 2025, with a majority coming from BoP & rural markets. Lot many National as well as International Development Agencies like DFID, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, etc. are known to be active in bridging these gaps from service provision to product development and need assessment among the developing countries. There is great disparity in the understanding about the investment and prioritization of the various aspects within the Health Market. The aim of the study was to identify areas where the market leaders and providers themselves believe that they have potential to invest and emerge.

    • Study Design: Descriptive/Qualitative study 
    •  Sampling Method: Snowball sampling 
    •   Respondents: Private providers from various sectors of health markets like NGO, Development Agencies, Academic Institutions, Private Companies, Hospitals and Consultancies  
    • Number of Respondents: 18  
    • Data Collection Tool: Pretested semi-structured set of questionnaire developed by Johns Hopkins University    Type of Data Collected: Both primary and secondary data was collected by adapted questionnaire.

  • Recommendations : 80 percent of the people interviewed were uneasy with the term health market and could not define it beyond their areas of operation. There is a need for awareness among the local players about the Health Market approach used by the development agencies. Areas like telemedicine and infrastructure development etc are seen as the prospective themes which require investments from the development agencies in the future.


The Objective of the study was to understand the perception of the Health market leaders about the role of Private players in introducing innovations in the healthcare market in India.
