To Asscess Food Fortification Awareness and Food Consumption Practices of the Community in Jaipur District, Rajasthan

  • Objective : The objective is to assess the level of Awareness and Current Practices of the community related to Food Fortification.
    The study is conducted to achieve the following specific Objectives:

    • To assess the awareness about food fortification.  
    • To understand the current consumption practices and preferences regarding food products such as wheat flour, edible oil and milk.  
    • To know the determinants and constraints in buying and consuming food product especially the wheat flour, edible oil and milk


  • Background : Malnutrition is both a medical and a social disorder, often rooted in poverty. High levels of malnutrition particularly among women and children have been influencing mortality and morbidity rates in infants, children and women. According to NFHS-3 (2005-2006) of 28 states (and Delhi), in India, Rajasthan: 79.6% among children of 6-35 months, 53.8% among married women, and 61.7% among pregnant women. The occurrence of Neural Tube Defects due to folic acid deficiency is also very high (18per 1000 live births) Minimal loss to Gross Domestic Product due to Micronutrient deficiencies per year is Rs 27, 720/- crores



  • Methodology : Method of Data Collection 
    •  Sample size- 300 households
    •  Data collection techniques- Primary and Secondary data  
    • Data collection tools- Structured questionnaire.  
    • Data collection process- Interview



  • Findings : Only 1/4th of the respondents are aware of the fortified wheat flour. Almost 20% of the respondents are aware of the Raj Atta. 56% of the respondent prefer to use packed oil from the market and preferablys sarson oil 73.3% of the respondents prefers to consume cattle milk. 91% from rural area and 34% from urban areas prefer to cattle Milk.



  • Recommendations : Since only few people are aware of the fortified food, IEC activities must be scaled up. The common current source of Information is WORD OF MOUTH. Present criteria for buying wheat flour, milk and edible oil is PRICE, QUALITY, and AVAILABILITY. Oil can be used as a good source of food fortification. Milk can be a good source of fortification in urban areas but not in rural areas.
