Promoting Rational Use of Medicines in Resource Limited Settings

Promoting Rational Use of Medicines in Resource Limited Settings
December 16-20, 2024
Program Coordinator: Dr. Saurabh Kumar Banerjee

Background

Rational use of medicines involves their appropriate use so that their selection, dose, and duration are according to the guidelines, suitable for clinical needs, at affordable cost to the provider, community, and the patient, and are dispensed correctly and taken properly. If the use of medicine is not as per these conditions, it is considered irrational or inappropriate use.
Protecting the public from the menace of irrational medicine use requires the presence of a robust mechanism and is a challenging and daunting task, especially in resource-limited countries. Lack of well-established systems for addressing medicine use may lead to non-attainment of healthcare goals and objectives; therefore, ensuring the rational use of medicines becomes more important, especially in resource-limited countries.
This training program is intended to assist countries with limited resources in developing a framework that could ensure the rational use of medicines, hence facilitating access to better clinical treatment outcomes.
