The School of Rural management established in 2012 seeks to produce and disseminate knowledge for holistic understanding of issues and challenges of development. An abiding faith in humanism, commitment to cosmopolitanism, respect for diversity of life and empathy with poor constitute core values of SRM. The unique position of the School within IIHMR University, a premier health management research university of the country enables a context for a rigorous inter disciplinary exploration of the different dimensions of human well being.

It offers two-year full-time Master of Business Administration in Rural Management (MBA-RM) with multiple specializations. The course is positioned to cater to needs of a rapidly transforming India where Developmental challenges are not limited to rural areas; indeed, the rural-urban continuum has made it virtually impossible to speak of rural or urban spaces in isolation. This programme aims at preparing professionals for a challenging career in public, private sectors, NGOs, and national and multinational organizations who are committed to erasing rural-urban inequities by promoting "rurban" infrastructure and amenities that emphasize a growing confluence of cities and the countryside.

  • Understand the concepts and techniques of modern management and their application in rural management
  • Develop skills in diagnosing and solving management problems in rural area.
  • Develop skills in planning, building and managing organizations in rural areas.
  • Develop consultancy skills in rural management.
  • Enlarge the outlook and vision of participants about the larger background and context of rural management in their practical process.

As the students reach the end of the third term, they will be required to choose any one among three “baskets” of specialization. They may choose from any one of the areas listed within the three baskets, each one designated as Management Domain, Development Studies, and Sectoral Specialization.

There is an increasing demand and scope for trained rural management professionals in the contemporary context of a rapidly transforming rural India. The Indian State has many flagship missions and programs focusing areas such as health, education, housing, water and sanitation, livelihoods and skill development to mention a few major ones. Most of these programmes at the centre and state level aim for the betterment of lives of rural communities. With the expansion of corporate social responsibility among companies, both private and public sector, there has been a widening of the space of CSR action contributing to rural renewal and economic resurgence for inclusive human development. The opening up of rural markets for FDI has created possibilities for backward and forward linkages of farmer producer companies / cooperatives with national and multi nationals companies.

MBA in Rural Management at IIHMR equips you with the required skill set honed by a pro poor perspective to contribute meaningfully to diverse processes associated with planning, implementing and monitoring programmes for fulfilling basic entitlements like health, nutrition, education, building rural livelihoods, etc. Rural Management professionals get opportunity to carve satisfying careers in contributing to infrastructure development, better integration of rural areas and communities with markets, promoting equitable use of natural resources and enhancing sustainable agriculture and livestock production.

MBA in Rural Management at IIHMR is a course that seeks to carve a middle ground between conventional management education and development studies. Classroom teaching as well field based learning are accorded equal importance throughout the roll out of the curriculum over two years. Courses offered are grouped under four categories-Foundational, Functional, Integrative and Development Practice.

The core of pedagogy seeks to balance analytical, professional, and experiential learning with the inspiration to act progressively in different spheres of life to truly impact life at the grassroots level necessary for the greater common good of countless people negotiating India’s “rural-urban continuum. Students are equipped to analyse, reflect, plan and execute sustainable development strategies in rural areas.

The course enables students to apply rigor and professionalism towards challenging issues of rural transformation in sectors as diverse as basic services like health, education, rural livelihoods, water security and sanitation by applying a judicious mix of traditional knowledge of communities with new appropriate technologies available in ICTs or renewable energy. One of the core objectives of the pedagogy is to inculcate values of active and responsible citizenship and humanist empathy for rural communities.
