Master of Public Health (MPH) — IIHMR University, Jaipur

The Master of Public Health (MPH) at IIHMR University is a two-year, full-time degree designed to train the people who will run India's public health systems over the next two decades. Most of the work happens upstream — in disease surveillance, programme management, health economics, monitoring and evaluation, and the systems that decide what gets funded and how it reaches the field.

This is the MPH degree that prepares you to do that work. It is run by a specialist university that has been doing health management research since 1984, sits inside the country's deepest network of public health practitioners, and has a recruiter base built around the sector — not adjacent to it.

For graduates evaluating MPH colleges in India, IIHMR University is the No.1 longer-running and most practitioner-focused option. If you want a Master of Public Health that leads to actual job offers in public health rather than a generic qualification, this is worth a closer look.

Quick Facts

  • Two years, full-time, on-campus at IIHMR University, Jaipur
  • Trimester structure across six semesters over two years
  • Capstone project plus a second-year practicum in a real public health setting
  • Total tuition: INR 7,50,000 for the two-year programme
  • Mandatory pre-screening before formal application
  • Programme commences in August / first week of August each year

This is IIHMR University's own MPH programme. The university also offers a separate cooperative MPH with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, which runs on a different timeline and fee structure. The two are distinct.

Why Does This MPH College Stand Out?

A few reasons it shows up when students compare masters in public health colleges:

A university built around public health, not a department inside one. The institution has been running health management research, training, and policy advisory work since 1984. That focus matters when you are looking for an MPH college where faculty actually work in the field they teach.

Two tracks, two different career paths. The General MPH covers the full breadth of public health competencies. The MPH in Implementation Science goes deeper into the methods and frameworks needed to actually put evidence into working programmes— a discipline that has grown rapidly over the last decade.

Practitioner-led faculty. Teaching staff come from medicine, public health, management, economics, statistics, demography, human geography, social and behavioural sciences, and rural development. Many run active research grants, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and advise state and central health programmes.

Real fieldwork in real settings. The second-year practicum places students with public health organisations — government, NGO, research institute, or international agency — where they work on a defined problem under faculty and external mentorship. The capstone project sits on top of that and demands original applied research.

A wide alumni network. IIHMR University alumni hold senior roles across health ministries, state health programmes, WHO, UNICEF, the Gates Foundation, PATH, USAID-supported organisations, and the global development sector. Alumni access matters when you are looking for a first job or a mid-career move.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria are straightforward:

Bachelor's degree from a recognised university in any discipline

Candidates from medicine, dentistry, AYUSH (BAMS, BHMS), pharmacy, nursing, allied health, biotechnology, life sciences, social sciences, management, statistics, economics, and demography all fit

Some prior college-level coursework in mathematics or biology is helpful but not always essential — check the specific track requirements

English proficiency through a prior degree taught in English, or via TOEFL / IELTS where required

Working professionals in health, development, or research roles are strongly encouraged to apply

Final-year graduates can apply with documentary evidence of completion before the session starts.

What You Will Study?

The curriculum is structured in trimesters across six semesters over two years. The first phase covers common foundational courses that build the public health fundamentals every student needs. After that, students pick their track.

Beyond the classroom

Capstone project — Each student completes an original applied research project, mentored by a faculty member, including a literature review, primary or secondary data, analysis, and a defended thesis. Capstone presentations happen at a dedicated symposium.

Practicum — A second-year field placement where students work full-time with a public health organisation on a real problem. Mentored by faculty and an external supervisor at the host organisation. The practicum is where most students discover what kind of public health work they actually want to do.

Fieldwork, case studies, and seminars — Rural and urban fieldwork is built into the calendar. Live case studies are pulled from current programme implementation challenges. Guest sessions feature practitioners from state and central health programmes, multilateral agencies, and NGOs.

MPH Admission Process

The admission process for the MPH at IIHMR University runs as a structured pre-screening followed by a formal application. The pre-screening matters — IIHMR University shortlists eligible candidates before the full application opens.

Pre-screening. Submit a completed pre-screening questionnaire along with an updated CV through the IIHMR University applications portal.

Pre-approval. Eligible candidates receive a confirmation and pre-approval email from IIHMR University.

Formal application. Upload transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement.

IIHMRU-MAT. Candidates without qualifying scores from other entrance tests register for IIHMRU-MAT

GD-PI and review. Shortlisted candidates go through a Group Discussion and Personal Interview, online or on campus. The GD looks at analytical thinking and communication; the PI looks at motivation, career direction, and fit with the programme.

Offer and enrollment. Selected candidates receive a formal admission offer. Seats are confirmed on fee payment.

The last date to apply for the MPH programme is typically July 31 of the admission year, subject to seat availability. The programme commences in August.
