After graduating from AFMC, joined Central Health Service Govt. of India 1972. He completed MD (Health Administration) and DNB and was awarded Colombo Plan Fellowship to undergo one year diploma in health services administration, university of Leeds (UK) 1981-82.
He served as Assistant Medical Superintendent at Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi and as Senior Faculty in department of Medical Care and Hospital Administration at NIHFW (1981-96). Subsequently, as Professor and Director at School of Health Sciences, IGNOU he pioneered the development and launch of a number of post-graduate diploma and degree programs for doctors and nurses. To name a few PG Diploma in Clinical Cardiology, Dialysis Medicine, Health Care Waste Management. Currently, Adjunct Professor IIHMR, New Delhi.

Dr. Agarwal visited more than 40 countries on various short term and long-term assignment of IGNOU, WHO, UNDP and Govt. of India. To his credit, he has more than 40 publications and 3 books including a chapter in WHO Geneva’s Blue Book (2nd Edition) on Health Care Waste Management. He has also served as

  1. Visiting teacher to Andrija Stamper School of Public Health, Zagreb, Croatia, 1988-1990, Quality Assurance and Accreditation expert in European Union – GOI, Nov 2012 – Dec 2013
  2. Principal investigator of a multicentric research study of WHO, SEARO on Health Care Waste Management and Hospital Associated Infections (2013-15),
  3. PI WHO SEARO Study "Immunization Waste Management in SEA countries," 2023. Member Academic Council and Member DRC, IIHMR University Jaipur.
  4. Accreditation expert for NAAC, NABH and Distance Education Council. Past President of Academy of Hospital Administration.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Agarwal has more than 38 years’ experience as a teacher, trainer, researcher and consultant in public health, hospital administration, distance learning, quality assurance and accreditation. NABH Accreditation Committee Member for three years from 2004 - 2007.
