Supporting National Health Mission (NHM) in developing capacities of Health care staff on improvement of WASH in Health Centers and NRCs in selected districts and further scale up across the State in Madhya Pradesh

UNICEF, Madhya Pradesh (MP) in partnership with National Health Mission (NHM), MP aims to build the capacity of the state and district level officials for improvement of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Health Centers and Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) in selected districts of MP. The program was implemented by IIHMR University, Jaipur in nine high priority districts (HPDs) named Anuppur, Umaria, Shahdol, Mandla, Guna, Sheopur and Shivpuri, Alrajpur and Jhabua with the following aim:

  • Build capacity of Healthcare staff, consultants, and Mentors on WASH related issues, especially demonstration of safe WaSH practices and use of monitoring tools, including support implementation of WASH improvement plans;
  • Assess the status of WASH infrastructure, services, and systems in the selected facilities;
  • Develop facility wise phased WASH improvement plans by the agency team, mentor team, BMOs and the MoICs;
  • Handholding support to MoICs/Health staff in operationalization & monitoring of the WASH improvement plans;
  • Share findings of assessment and operationalization of improvement plans with NHM implementers and policymakers for improved action and resourcing for WaSH in health in Health and Contribute to state strategy and statement of procedures (SoPs).

During prescribe period July 2016-August 2019 around 200 health professionals including Deputy Director (Quality Assurance), State Consultants from NHM, Chief Health & Medical officer (HMOs), DPMs, Medical Officers of facilities, In-charge Medical officers of NRCs, DCM, Program officers were trained on the aspect of WASH and how to bring changes by involving themselves in assessment and developing improvement program. The changes were measured by Star grading tools, which revealed that around 76 percent of the facilities were achieved more than 75 percent on WASH compliances, and around half of the facilities comply up-to 90 percent of the WASH parameters. This was possible by building the capacity of around 700 staff nurses and cleaning staff in 19 sessions across 7 districts. Not only this, but the divisional level workshop was also organized to ensure impact in the health facilities of the 32 ODF block spread across another 11 districts. Key findings were shared with the Mission Director and other stakeholders to bring attention to making a separate policy on WASH for health facilities and leveraged around 78 lakhs from an untied fund for making the significant and sustainable change.
