Building Resilience in Children and Caregivers in Times of COVID-19

August 06- August 08, 2021
Program Coordinator: Dr. Ratna Verma
Mode: Online

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on health and economies across the globe. The pandemic containment measures, related lockdown and prolonged social isolation have potentially serious impacts on almost all the aspects of child development including physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and mental health. The pandemic led to the economic crisis at a family level, school closure, and interruption in child protection services increased the likelihood of exposing children to a range of risks and vulnerabilities such as child poverty, child labour, child abuse, child marriage, human trafficking, and violence.
With the COVID-19 second wave and related deaths, many children have lost their parents and caregivers. The traumatic experiences faced by children have lifelong consequences on child psychosocial wellbeing. In a country like India where a large number of children face multiple vulnerabilities, the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the situation of such children mainly children from low-income families, children living on the streets, children with disabilities, orphans, migrant children, and children living in difficult circumstances etc. The challenge ahead of reducing vulnerabilities for children is significant. Failing to address the challenge would have long-lasting impact on children.
Understanding the psychosocial impact of pandemics on children and care givers and building resilience among children and caregivers is highly important to help them cope with the challenges in a time of COVID-19 and avoid further consequences on child well-being.
The training program intends to enhance the knowledge and understanding of professionals, practitioners, and organizations to promote resilience and positive responses for marginalized children and care providers at the time of COVID-19 pandemic. The course provides an opportunity to learn from the experiences of child rights practitioners and organizations working effectively on the issue.
