Ethics and Governance of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
February 10-12, 2025
Program Coordinator: Dr Vidya Bhushan Tripathi

Background

The rapid advancement of big data and artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed various sectors, including healthcare, by introducing innovative solutions that can improve diagnosis, treatment, and patient care. However, with these advancements there are significant ethical challenges, particularly regarding data privacy, bias, transparency, and accountability. AI technologies have the potential to exacerbate inequalities if not governed properly, leading to disparities in access to care and health outcomes across different regions. As healthcare systems increasingly adopt AI solutions, it is crucial for policymakers, developers, designers, and healthcare professionals to understand the ethical frameworks and governance structures necessary to ensure AI is used responsibly, equitably, and transparently. Big data and Artificial intelligence (AI) offer significant opportunities to improve health outcomes and advance universal health coverage. However, for AI to truly benefit public health, its design, development, and implementation must prioritize ethical considerations and human rights. This course, drawing on key insights from the Guidance on Ethics & Governance of Artificial Intelligence for Health, is designed for individuals like you—policymakers, AI developers, designers, and healthcare providers—who are shaping the future of AI in healthcare. It provides essential knowledge to help you responsibly create, apply, and regulate AI systems that prioritize public well-being.
