Effective Implementation of Health Programme Through Implementation Research

Effective Implementation of Health Programme Through Implementation Research
December 5-7, 2024
Program Coordinator: Dr. Piyusha Majumdar

Background

Successful and effective implementation of the health programmes is critical for achieving the health outcomes. Health programmes are, though, based on evidence-based sound strategies and technologies, yet unable to achieve key performance indicators and health outcomes due to various barriers in access, availability, and utilization of health services, such as lack of community awareness, inadequate logistics, and supplies, transportation, shortage of human resources, lack of motivation and training of the health workforce, and partnerships and coordination.
Implementation Science is a new and emerging area in public health that entails identifying problems and priority setting, analysis of causes and barriers to effective implementation, developing solutions and effective implementation of activities and monitoring of programme. IIHMR University has developed a Management Development Programme on the Effective Implementation of Health Programmes through Implementation Research, which builds on lessons learned in the successful eradication of poliomyelitis under the Global Polio Eradication Initiatives (GPEI).

Objectives of The Program

The Management Development Programme aims to build the capacity to identify the challenges of various health settings, assess the appropriateness of existing strategies, and develop new interventions and strategies by working with communities and stakeholders. This includes designing rigorous IR proposals, identifying IR outcomes, evaluating effectiveness, and making a plan to scale up real-life implementation.
The specific objectives of the programme are as follows:

  • To demonstrate practice in implementation science/ research in field settings
  • To understand the gaps in implementing evidence into practice
  • To learn about the practical and sustainable implementation strategies for health programmes
  • Identify bottlenecks and barriers to programme implementation
