Baseline Assessment of Urban Eye Health Programme in Jaipur Slums

The overall aim of this study is to better understand the demand and provision of eye care services in Jaipur with a specific focus on urban slum-dwelling communities. Indian Institute for Health Management Research in Jaipur was contracted to support the data collection phase and analysis, responsibilities included: organizing FGDs, recruitment and training of enumerators, supervision of field work, data encoding, data analysis, etc. The specific study objectives were a) To assess the magnitude and causes of avoidable blindness and visual impairment in project target population (i.e. slum dwellers) b) To generate data to support and evaluate the provision of primary eye care services to slum-dwellers with a focus on refractive error (RE) correction and presbyopia. c) To assess the knowledge, attitude and practices related to eye health among slum-dwellers. d) To map and collect information on health providers that are delivering eye care services to slum communities and e) To assess slum-dwellers capacity and willingness to pay for spectacles. The data collection included four main components,1) Facility Mapping and Assessment 2) Household Survey in Slums 3) Qualitative, Individual and Group Interviews in Slums and 4) Facility Based Data Collection. In this survey multi-stage cluster random sampling approach was used; using wards as primary sampling units and slums as secondary sampling units. Information was then used as a baseline for Sightsavers urban eye health project for evaluation purpose and it was used to design project activities in Jaipur.
